5   USE COMPETENCIES TO CONQUER THE BOSS

By Ms. Sandy Deng ,Associate Consultant, Onpress Beijing

Ms. Deng was an English teacher before she joined Onpress Beijing as a recruiter.  She has just completed her master degree in Psychology in Beijing.  She possesses many talents in the people field.

During the past ten years, MBA education is booming in China. At present, there’re 55 higher education colleges and universities, which can award the MBA degree, and there are a total of more than 3,000 MBA graduates; more than 20,000 are studying for this degree.  More and more people show great interests in it.  Meanwhile, a heated dispute about which one is better—“foreign” or “local”—is growing in intensity. As a professional recruitment firm with over 9 years’ experience, we would like to share our views on this issue with our readers.

To receive a further tertiary education and to master the advanced management concepts are a set of good choices for many people.  Undoubtedly, the MBA opens a career path for people with such aspirations, i.e. it not only helps upgrade middle managers to senior ones, but it also raises the standards of the professional manager.  However, we should not loose the sight that the MBA is not “a multi-purpose key to any career”; without the right skill sets and mental framework, this degree is not necessarily the key to success!

In recent years, Onpress has handled many returnees, many of these are MBA graduates.  We also deal with many local MBAs.  The competition between two groups is getting fierce.  In actual fact, most enterprises do not give special treatment to MBA graduates when they recruit employees.  Recruiters tend to focus more on the candidates’ core competencies and experiences.  They prefer those people who possess the necessary experience in managing people, a department or corporate function or an enterprise, with clear and modern strategic thinking skills.
The MBA degree is no more than a reference to the candidate’s ambition, time management and other skills when a recruiter evaluates a candidate; the ultimate tests are more related to the candidate’s technical skills, intelligence, communication, people and political skills, the chemistry between the employee and the hiring manager, and other personality traits.

Therefore, we do believe that the contents of one’s resume could not definitely constitute a good performance and career; a more important consideration is what and how you can contribute to your company.  In the long-term, it’s wise to use your competencies to conquer the boss.

For many years, Onpress International has devoted to acting as a bridge between enterprises and talents. We have provided the most professional service to various clients from different industries.
